A FOOTBALL club for youngsters has taken on a new responsibility – and become a lifesaver.

Since Bolton Wanderers footballer Fabrice Muamba collapsed with a heart attack on the pitch in 2012, the FA has been raising awareness of sudden cardiac arrests amongst grassroots clubs and communities.

Under its welfare plan, Thirsk Falcons Junior Football Club identified the need for better emergency equipment and thanks to a grant from Hambleton District Council’s small grant scheme have now been able to buy a defibrillator and cabinet.

“The club is experiencing significant growth and has strong links with Falcons Seniors and Sowerby Gateway,” said club chairman Wayne Sowden.

“Having emergency lifesaving equipment close to hand will benefit not only our own players but also visiting teams and visiting caravanners and will increase the club’s capabilities in terms of hosting regional tournaments.

“We held our first defibrillator training and awareness session last week when 30 volunteers were trained to enable them to administer basic life support until the emergency services arrive.”

*Earlier this year the club received the highest award in the grassroots game for providing excellent opportunities for young players.

The FA Charter Standard Community Status means the club can use the Three Lions FA crest on its marketing and business materials, which could help boost sponsorship, and demonstrate to parents the club has most advanced level of development and football provision.
