TO COINCIDE with the BBC’s new series The Great Pottery Throw Down, which sees ten potters compete to be crowned Britain’s best amateur potter, Thirsk-based charity Rural Arts will host a Hey Clay! day – a free event celebrating the wonders of clay.

It takes place at Rural Arts on Saturday, December 5, from 10am-4.30pm, as part of a national Hey Clay! weekend.

The aim of the weekend is to introduce people to the joys of clay and Rural Arts has a full day of demonstrations, drop-in workshops, stalls and a ceramic exhibition.

More than ten regional potters will display and selling their wares, as well as demonstrating techniques from raku and throwing on potters’ wheels, hand building and slip trailing. Visitors will have the opportunity to try their hand with expert guidance and ask questions.

“We want to demystify the process and get people enthused about pottery and our talented regional artists,” said Angela Hall, director of Rural Arts.

Free workshops for all ages and abilities (children under eight to be accompanies by an adult) rub from 10am-12noon and 1pm-3pm with the chance to make ceramic cupcakes, sgraffito tiles, pinch and coil pots and tealight holders to be fired in a kiln.
