DOMESTIC abuse happens regardless of background, is the message from refuge workers reaching out to Darlington’s growing multi-cultural community.

From internet brides to abused pensioners, staff at Family Help Darlington are used to dealing with a diverse range of issues and are keen to highlight the inclusive nature of the centre.

As Darlington’s community grows, the refuge staff are working to help people of all cultures and backgrounds cope with the impact of domestic abuse.

On a daily basis, they work to understand the challenges universal to most victims, as well as those unique to people of diverse backgrounds.

As staff continually try to build bridges in their bid to support hard to reach communities, assistant manager Susan Degnan spoke out to say the refuge’s doors are open to all.

She said: “Nationally, one in six men and one in four women suffer from domestic abuse, with two women a week being killed.

“Sometimes it can be difficult for people to seek help because of their culture and differences in it.

“There are lots of different perspectives when it comes to what abuse is – some people might not realise they are being abused and some don’t realise they are perpetrators.

“Different cultures treat domestic abuse differently – some of the women we treat as victims would be sent to correction centres to become better wives in other countries, some might even be sent to prison.

“We’ve had a spate of internet brides who’ve come to the country to marry someone, it hasn’t worked out, they’ve been treated badly and have ended up here.

“It is quite important for us to try to reach hard to reach groups, such as the Armed Forces, over-50s, travellers, same-sex couples, the Polish or the BME community.

“We are here to help everyone, of any age or culture.

“We want everyone to know there’s a safe space here and help for everyone, regardless of background.”

Family Help Darlington offers support 24/7, with secure accommodation for abused women, a helpline and signposting and advice for both men and women.
