NEWCASTLE UNITED goalkeeper Rob Elliot has been named in Republic of Ireland's 30-man squad for this weekend's Euro 2016 play-off double-header with Bosnia.

However, with the 29-year-old still struggling with an ongoing thigh injury, Newcastle's medical staff will have the opportunity to assess him before he reports for duty with the rest of Martin O'Neill's squad.

Elliot, who was Newcastle's match-winner in Saturday's 1-0 victory at Bournemouth, was one of four goalkeepers named by O'Neill in tonight's squad.

David Forde, Darren Randolph and Keiren Westwood have also been selected, but O'Neill is understood to be keen to have Elliot as part of his group as Ireland look to qualify for next summer's European Championships in France.

Speaking after Newcastle's win on the south coast on Saturday, Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren confirmed that he did not want Elliot to report for international duty.

The first leg of Ireland's play-off takes place in Sarajevo on Friday, with the return game scheduled for Dublin the following Monday.
