A SCHOOL has unveiled a new engineering classroom in a bid to encourage students to join the engineering trade.

Hurworth School showcased its engineering suite which is an extension to the design and technology workshop on Friday (November 6).

It was opened by Darlington MP Jenny Chapman and the MP for Sedgefield Phil Wilson and the ceremony was attended by school governors, councillors and representatives from local engineering companies.

The extension and a computer room, called the design hub, are part of a two and a half year project that has cost between £80,000 and £100,000.

A group of Year 10s tested out products in the suite, including a 3D printer, laser cutter and industry standard tools and machines.

Jamie Smith, head of the Design and Technology department, said: "To finally open the engineering section is a big celebration for us. The space itself is excellent and we're really pleased with how its gone.

"The North-East and Darlington has got a long history of being strong in engineering, so we are trying to give our students the best possible start in life and best possible route into the engineering industry. There's some fantastic companies where students can work."
