A PHYSICS teacher is set to prove her skills range from the theory of relativity to kitchen-based creativity by displaying a cake based on a science fiction film at an international show.

Katie Ward, of Thirsk, will be among a group of 40 cake artists from around the world, showcasing her skills at an exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Rocky Horror Show at Cake International.

She was selected to take part because of her love of colourful and dramatic cakes and has produced a flamboyant three-tiered cake based on the pool scene, and features a lifebelt, lacy basque and pearl necklace.

The Teesside High School teacher, who has started baking three years ago, said she had started work on the cake in September, had watched the movie more than 20 times for inspiration and had employed her scientific knowledge to create it.

She said: "I'm a full time physics teacher rather than a full-time caker, so this is exciting for me."

Ms Ward said having previously entered competitions at the Birmingham National Exhibition Centre show, the world’s largest display of competition pieces and demonstrators, she would be able to enjoy the event as her cake would not be judged.
