A HOME-GROWN feast greeted visitors to a Darlington primary school recently.
Last month, children at Abbey School worked hard to prepare a meal for their parents using produce grown on site and a recent open day saw visitors enjoy food harvested by children from the school’s new allotment.
The 'Awesome Abbey Allotment' was created when pupils and staff transformed a wild area with the help of the High Grow Darlo initiative and volunteers from the Environment Agency.
The school’s gardening club tended to the allotment throughout the year, planting seeds and developing a sustainable site.
Their efforts came to fruition with a hearty crop that has been used by the children learning to cook at the school’s teaching kitchens.
Abbey School’s deputy head, Vicky Folkes, said: “The children have learned a lot and grown a lot of different fruit and veg with the help of volunteers including parents and grandparents.
“It’s great for them to nurture something from a seed and see it right through to food they’ve made.
“It’s a big thing for them to grow healthy food and it goes with what we’re trying to teach them.
“A few of them have been going home and helping in their own gardens.
“It’s been a real success and we’ll be continuing with it.”
