TWO NEW world records were set at at the British Limousin Cattle Society's autumn bull sale at Carlisle on Saturday, October 17th.

Trueman Jagger (pictured) from Henry Savage & Sons of Newry, Co. Down, sold for 140,000gns (£147,000) – a new record price for an individual Limousin bull.

And the 85 bulls sold in the sale at Harrison and Hetherington's Borderway mart averaged a new UK all-breeds record of £8,709.

The overall average was up by more than £3,200 on the year. Intermediate bull averages were over £10,000 and 13 bulls made 10,000gns or more.

It was a tremendous sale for H & H, the Limousin cattle society, Henry Savage & Sons and auctioneers James Little and Grant Anderson.

Mr Little opened the bidding for Trueman Jagger at 50,000gns. He said: "There was a tremendous show of animals; however this bull from Northern Ireland really did stand out from amongst the crowd. There was a lot of talk before Trueman Jagger came into the ring so it was evident that there would be considerable interest. Bidding started at 50,000gns and from then on interest was intense with a number of people extremely keen to buy."

At the previous day's pre-sale show Trueman Jagger was the overall supreme champion and intermediate champion. He was widely described as one of the best bulls ever seen at a British Limousin Cattle Society Sale.

He was bought by a five way syndicate of Limousin breeders which comprised of Messrs Jenkinson, Whinfellpark herd, Penrith; Michael & Melanie Alford, Foxhillfarm, Cullompton, Devon; Paul Dawes, Dinmore herd, Hereford; Gareth Lee, Calogale herd, Carmarthenshire; and Kedzlie Farm Ltd, Swalesmoor herd, Lauderdale.

Mrs Alford, speaking on behalf of the syndicate, said: "There’s exceptional potential in a bull of this outstanding quality. He has size, shape, style, is very correct, and walks well.

"The terrific weight gain that he has shown is something that you would expect he will pass on to his progeny. He has fantastic figures and his bloodlines bring something a little different as well.

"He’s a ‘marquee’ bull with a huge future ahead of him and one in time that through semen collection we aim to make available to breeders and across the board both domestically and internationally."
