York City 1 Wimbledon 3

York City have now gone nine games without a League Two win and there were more calls from fans for manager Russell Wilcox to be sacked as his team lost 3-1 to Wimbledon.

Following the South Londoners’ victory, beleaguered Bootham Crescent boss Wilcox refused to defend his players, confessing: “It was shambolic. We are fighting for our lives at the bottom of the league but the first half was a non-event.

“We never turned up, didn’t make a tackle and failed to get close to people or pass the ball well. Wimbledon also went with two runners up front to stretch the game and we couldn’t deal with it.

“I’ve protected players all season but they were not good enough and have got to take responsibility for that. I will do, but the players have got to look at themselves as well.

“We had a go in the second half and got back into the game but, then, we did what we usually do – shot ourselves in the foot by conceding cheap goals. Their second goal was in slow motion and that’s unacceptable.”

“At the moment, it’s a toss of a coin for who I put in back there and that’s why I’ve changed the centre halves around and changed systems. It was a back four (against Wimbledon) and we’ve tried a back five, maybe we’ll go with a back six next time.

“That’s obviously tongue in cheek but it’s frustrating because you want players to do the basics. They get paid good money and get looked after big time at a club with fantastic facilities and a board who support the players but what they’re getting back in return at the moment is not good enough.

“My coaching staff work hard as do I and everything is in place in terms of infrastructure for the club to move forward with the training ground and the new stadium on the horizon. I also feel for the fans – totally - because we have to entertain and we didn’t.”
