MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1): De Gea 7; Valencia 6, Smalling 6, Blind 7 (Jones 74), Darmian 6; Schneiderlin 6, Carrick 7 (Schweinsteiger 68, 5); MATA 8, Rooney 7, Memphis 8 (Young 77); Martial 7. Subs (not used): Romero (gk), Herrera, Fellaini, Pereira.

SUNDERLAND (4-1-4-1):

4 Pantilimon: Made one first half save but got nowhere near to the goals and almost ended up red faced after first a mix up with Kaboul;

4 Jones: Lost Depay to allow him to score the first and after that it was difficult

5 Kaboul: Looked strong at times but then also had his moments of madness too

6 O’Shea: The pick of the defenders but it was never going to be an easy return to his former home

4 van Aanholt: Could have scored in the second half and still looks more suitable as an attacker;

6 CATTERMOLE: Unfortunate to be booked but at least he showed signs of pulling the team together

4 Johnson: Looked off the pace and was replaced at the break

6 M’Vila: Always tried to get involved and he will only get better in a settled midfield;

4 Toivonen: Struggled to deal with the pace of the game and will need to find a way to deal with the stronger side of things

5 Lens: Could have scored the first goal of the game but had to defend more than he liked;

5 Borini: Found it tough on his own up front at Old Trafford but most do

Subs:

Fletcher (for Johnson 46): Had little opportunity to make an impact up front. 5

Larsson (for Toivonen 70): Just slotted in and will hope for a greater chance in the weeks ahead. 5

(not used): Gomez, Defoe, Yedlin, Coates, Mannone (gk).

MAN OF THE MATCH JUAN Mata – created two and scored one himself to help the Red Devils march to the top and leave Sunderland at the bottom.
