BUSINESSES are encouraged to help one of the region’s oldest athletics clubs as it prepares to celebrate its 125th anniversary.

Darlington Harriers launched in 1891 and is the oldest athletics club in the town.

To mark their milestone anniversary, which takes place next year, the Harriers are planning a day of celebrations at their base in Eastbourne Sports Complex, in Darlington, on Saturday, June 11, 2016.

The event will take place from 11am to 9pm and will feature family entertainment, music, refreshments and a number of races, as well as an attempt to break the four minute mile for the first time in Darlington.

Apprentice star Katie Bulmer-Cooke will be opening the event with a warm up, and organisers are looking for sponsors and musicians to perform on the day.

Local businesses are also being encouraged to take part in the event, with stalls costing £10.

Organiser Paul Cook said: “The club is really excited at celebrating such a milestone, 125 years in athletics is an amazing achievement considering the club is ran by people who give up their own time to coach and develop people of all ages or just to get people active.

“For me it’s more than just about us as a club, it’s a great opportunity to celebrate this for the town and get local businesses, schools and people from the community to have a great day together with lots of fun and entertainment.

“We will have activities for all ages as well as some talented UK athletes on show attempting to break the four minute mile which has never been done in the town.

“Hopefully the people of Darlington will come along with their families and have a great day.”
