AN elderly man was airlifted to hospital after three cars collided near Sedgefield last night (Friday, August 21)
The accident occurred close to the turning for Hardwick Hall Hotel on the A177 shortly after 6pm.
One of the drivers, an elderly man, was unable to get out of his car due to his injuries and was freed by firefighters.
Fire crews from Sedgefield and Bishop Auckland attended, along with the ambulance service, the Great North Air Ambulance Service and Durham Road Policing Unit, which tweeted a picture of the accident scene.
Andy Bruce, station manager at County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The ambulance and Air Ambulance staff were very concerned about the man as he was suffering with a cardiac condition. There were no other obvious signs of injury. The fire service removed the car door as the doctors wanted to get him to hospital as quickly as possible.”
The man was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
The drivers and passengers of the other vehicles suffered minor injuries.
