YORK CITY boss Russ Wilcox criticised his own side’s supporters after they jeered the club’s players from the field in the wake of Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers.

Stephane Zubar’s 20-yard own goal capped a disastrous opening day for the Minstermen, and the travelling contingent were quick to voice their frustration.

The final whistle was met with a chorus of booing from the away end, while chants of ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ were also directed at Wilcox in the closing stages.

“I don’t want to hear the kind of things that I heard from the supporters at the end,” said the York boss. “We’re all disappointed but, come on, we need a bit more support than that.

“We’ve been beaten 3-0, but it was one game and we don’t need that. We’ve lost one match, but it doesn’t mean we’ll have a bad season.

“I’m happy with the squad I’ve put together. I was disappointed for everybody at the football club because it wasn’t the start we wanted, but there were glimpses of things that encouraged me.”

Wycombe opened the scoring in the seventh minute following an uncharacteristic error from Keith Lowe. The York defender tried to head the ball back to goalkeeper Scott Flinders, but only succeeded in playing in Anthony Stewart, who flicked home.

York fell further behind midway through the first half, with Aaron Amadi-Holloway seizing on a loose ball before drilling past Flinders from 15 yards.

Zubar’s remarkable own goal completed York’s misery, with the defender lofting the ball over Flinders’ head from outside the area, under pressure from Amadi-Holloway.
