A POLICE band delighted visitors to a market town with a medley of memorable melodies.

The 21-piece Durham Constabulary brass band played a mixture of music old and new to about 30 visitors at Scar Top in Barnard Castle on Saturday (August 1).

Deputy conductor, John Robson led trumpet, cornet and bass players through classical favourites to the theme tune from Star Wars.

Mr Robson, a retired gardener from Sunderland, said: “The best thing about being in this band is the enjoyment you get from playing music. I’ve played since I was 12 and I’m now 72. I love it.”

Tenor horn player, Sue Harrison, 55, from Durham added: “Originally the band was entirely made up of police officers – I’m a retired police officer myself – but as the years have progressed, officers have retired and we now invite civilians who are of good standing in the community to join.

“Our work is largely public relations, promoting links between the constabulary and the public.”

The band in its present form dates back to 1967 when Sunderland Borough Police amalgamated with Durham County Police.

In September, 2004 the band played in the national finals of the Boosey & Hawkes National Brass Band Champions of Great Britain at the International Conference Centre, Harrogate and were warmly received by the public.
