AN ADVENTURE play trail has been opened in one the region’s largest forests.

The new play trail at Hamsterley Forest officially opened on Sunday (August 2) and features new wooden balance beams, stepping logs and clamber net.

With the first phase complete, the outdoor activity route is 50 metres long and has been designed for anyone over four to enjoy.

However, the Forestry Commission plan to extend it to a whopping 800 metres, straddling both banks of Bedburn Beck to create an even bigger attraction for visitors.

Those attending the launch on Sunday were invited to contribute ideas for what they would like to see in the trail’s next phases.

Jointly funded by DEFRA Northern Lands Fund and Forestry Commission England, the course challenges visitors to balance, jump and climb along the length of the course without their feet touching the floor.

Hamsterley Forest has seen a lot of developments over the last few years including the opening of the new OddSox Trail in May, a new bridge and a refurbished visitor centre, car park and cycle centre.

Alex Maclennan, the Forestry Commission’s Recreation and Public Affairs Manager, said: “Carefully constructed to be both challenging and fun for all ages, the trail gives children the chance to have their first attempt at this style of course in a safe outdoor environment.”
