24-year-old Shane Tunney died in hospital on Wednesday, almost five weeks after an alleged attack on Holly Street, Norton.

Mr Tunney and his friend, Anthony Kirk, had been to visit the cash point at Tesco Express on Norton High Street at around 2am on Saturday, June 27 when they were pelted with rotten food by a group of youths. Following a verbal altercation, the two men were allegedly attacked by a number of young males a short time later.

Shane had flagged down a passing motorist who offered to take him away from the scene, but Shane refused to leave his friend who was allegedly being beaten.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Young said: “Officers have made an eighth arrest this morning in connection with this investigation. The man is currently in custody and another seven teenagers remain on bail pending further enquiries.

“Again, today, I want to repeat my appeal to members of the local community. Please come forward with any information that you may have. Shane was a hero on the night of the assault and he has paid the ultimate price.”
