STRAWBERRIES are a summer delight, a seasonal delicacy sure to be a treat for anybody’s palate.

And now a family-run farm in North Yorkshire is celebrating the bright red fruit by holding its very own Strawberry Day in an effort to highlight the quality of those grown in the area.

Tom Spilman, of Church Farm at Sessay, near Thirsk, said the recent warm and sufficiently wet weather had led to its newly- expanded 14-acre patch of Rosie, Christine, Korona, Symphony and Florence strawberries producing a bumper crop of exceptionally sweet fruit.

He said the event on Sunday, July 19, from noon to 4pm, would include a straw bale maze next to the strawberry fields, a strawberry trail and a range of free activities for children alongside a picnic area.

Mr Spilman said: "I've wanted to do this for ages as we are proud of what we have produced here since 1970.

"Strawberries from the supermarket can be a bit tasteless, so people can undervalue them.

"This day will add some extra fun to the pick your own, which is already a great family activity."
