AS befits a club whose course was designed by the creator of Augusta, Dr Alister MacKenzie, there is an international flavour to next month’s North of England Under-14s Championship at the South Moor club in Stanley.

A 12-year-old from Dong Guanin in Hong Kong, Sing Yin Lin, is in the field for the 54-hole tournament on August 11-14 as is 13-year Liam van Deventer, from Gauteng in South Africa.

England Boy international, Barclay Brown, from the Hallamshire club in South Yorkshire, is defending the title he won last year.

The girls section includes Abbi Wheatley, from the host club, part of the winning partnership in the Inter County Junior Mixed Foursomes this season.

A top contender is Beamish Park’s Alex Stevenson, a member of the Under 16 England Girls Northern Group Training Squad.

Going for the Under-12s title are two nine-year-olds, Freddie McKenna (Tynemouth) and Kieran Hall (Castle Eden).

The international interest following last year’s inaugural tournament at South Moor is another feather in the cap of a club which staged the Northern Echo supported England Under-16s Junior Boys Open in 2011.

The 2015 entries for the Under-14 event close on July 27 and all players must have a CONGU handicap or its international equivalent.
