THE recently elected MP for Richmondshire, Rishi Sunak, was the guest speaker at the annual dinner of the Lance Corporal Ben Hyde Memorial Trust.

He was among 72 guests at the event, held at the Golden Lion Hotel in Northallerton, which raised around £2,000 for the charity.

The trust was founded following the tragic death of L/Cpl Hyde in 2003. Northallerton born and bred, he was one of six military policemen murdered by a mob in Iraq.

His parents John and Sandra set up the trust in his memory two years later and it has since worked tirelessly at raising funds for a wide variety of good causes.

So far it has raised more than £40,000, helping not only the Royal Military Police Benevolent Fund but also many local community services such as the Friarage Hospital and many youth organisations.

“It was an excellent evening and we are always proud to remember Ben, who was a devoted peacekeeper, in this way,” said John.
