PUPILS have won their school a £25,000 “energy makeover” after becoming runners up in a dance competition judged by Diversity stars.

Students from Wensleydale School and Sixth Form took part in the Generation Green competition run by British Gas recently.

The contest, held at the White Rose shopping centre in Leeds, was judged by Britain’s Got Talent stars Jordan Banjo and Perri Kiely, from Diversity. They awarded points for the children’s creative dance moves and the amount of energy they created when they danced on a special power-generating mat called Pavegen.

The North Yorkshire school came runner-up in the contest and has won an energy makeover which will include solar panels, LED lighting and a new energy-efficient boiler.

It is estimated it could save the school more than £7,000 a year on fuel.

The pupils school earned their place in the final after submitting their creative designs for an energy-saving school of the future.

Their creative ideas were shortlisted from 500 from the region and included solar powered computers, bikes in classrooms to power the projectors and wearable wristbands which charge-up when pupils move, to power mobile phones.

Janine Preston teacher at The Wensleydale School and Sixth Form said: “We’ve had a great day and are delighted our school will be transformed with the energy makeover.

“The children worked really hard on their designs for an eco-school of the future and the dance routine, and although the competition was tough, they’ve enjoyed every minute.”
