A RESCUE centre overwhelmed by Persian cats has issued an emergency appeal for help.

St Francis Cat Rescue specialises in caring for the animals, but has been swamped by cats in need, so they’re asking foster carers to come forward.

The centre at Thornborough, near Bedale, has more than 30 cats on site with five more waiting to come in.

Pauline Wright, who launched the centre after establishing a boarding cattery in 1988, said: “Families fall for their beautiful looks without realising the amount of grooming required to keep these types of cats healthy. Persian cats need daily grooming and their eyes should be cleaned daily. "For busy families, that is just not realistic so they end up with us.

“We will provide all the training necessary and equipment."

The rescue centre's cats are spayed or neutered and vaccinated against flu, enteritis and feline Leukaemia, while their teeth are checked and dental work carried out if needed.

Any other conditions that require attention are also treated, regardless of cost. The cats are also de-matted and thoroughly groomed.
