A FLOCK of giant seagulls is preparing to descend on a North-East town this summer.

For the third year running, Distinct Darlington is bringing Darlington by the Sea to the town’s market square from Friday, July 24 to Thursday, August 6.

Along with a sandy ‘beach,’ complete with deckchairs, and traditional seaside entertainment, four giant birds will join the crowds, putting visitors in a flap with their avian antics.

The seagulls street theatre performance, on Saturday, August 1, forms part of a packed programme of creative workshops, live entertainment and film screenings.

Other highlights will include opportunities for youngsters to help shipwrecked Pearl the Pirate find her missing treasure.

On July 28 and August 4, children will be invited to help Pearl create a giant map and shell and pebble compasses for the hunt and join her in singing sea shanties and playing games.

There will also be Punch and Judy shows on July 27 and 30, and August 6, as well as the chance to take part in arts and crafts activities with Scrap Studio on July 29 and August 5.

The event also features ice cream vans and fairground rides.
