A DESPERATE shortage of volunteers is affecting the work of a charity which provides a range of services to elderly and disabled people in Hambleton.

Thirsk and Sowerby Community Care Association is running so low on volunteers that it is having to put new clients on waiting lists because it is unable to support them.

The charity has now launched a volunteer recruitment campaign in a bid to tackle the problem.

TSCAA, which has been running for more than 30 years, is looking for people willing to give up a few hours of their time to help with services such as befriending, meals on wheels, shopping support, driving and respite sitting.

Chief officer Ellen Cross said: “The situation in regard to volunteers has become desperate but we are hoping we can attract new people who are able to give up some of their time to help us.

“Even a few hours each week would make a massive difference to our work. It could be something as simple as dropping in for a cup of tea and chat to someone who is rurally or socially isolated; through to providing carers with a few hours respite so they can have a bit of much-needed time to themselves.

“Every time we receive a referral for our services we need to match a suitable volunteer but due to our current shortage of volunteers it means we are having to put clients on a waiting list, which we would rather not do.

“Waiting for support can lead to increased stress in that individual and it can also impact on carers too as they need to be able to take a break.”

She added: “We would like to hear from volunteers of all ages but we are particularly keen to encourage younger people. It would be ideal, for example, for someone planning to go to school or university who may need to demonstrate work/life experience as part of their application.

“Volunteering can also suit those who have recently retired and are looking to fill their days after a lifetime at work. We have a fabulous team but we need additional volunteers to meet the huge increase in demand for our services."

The association provides all training and expenses so volunteers will not find themselves out of pocket.
