A GOLFER got more than he bargained for when he picked up his clubs for a day on the greens.

Gerard Woods went to Rockliffe Hall, in Hurworth, near Darlington, to take part in an amateur tournament organised by Bridgestone Tyres, but came home with a luxury BMW i3 electric car worth £30,000.

Retired Mr Woods, from Croft-on-Tees, said: “I had just turned up to play golf in the tournament and I was approached by one of the organisers who asked if I had filled in a registration form.

“As part of that I had to pick five numbers from zero to nine. I just picked them completely at random - they weren’t numbers that had any personal importance.

“I chose the numbers and then I was told that I had won the car. I wouldn’t even be able to remember the numbers now!”

The tournament was one of six regional events organised by Bridgestone. The winners of each heat will now go forward to play in the finals at The Belfry for the chance to win a dream trip to Ohio, US, to watch the World Golf Championship at Firestone Country Club.

Bridgestone’s consumer sales and marketing director, Farrell Dolan, congratulated Mr Woods and said: “We thought it would be fantastic to give our golfers the chance to win a luxury car as well as the chance to play at The Belfry and a trip to America as part of our amateur championship.

“We have a close relationship with BMW as one of their main tyre suppliers and we offered the i3 to the lucky person who could correctly guess five digits in the correct order to unlock it."
