THOUSANDS descended on a North-East town today for the funeral of one of the region’s most legendary bikers.

The funeral of Jungle, the former head of the Darlington Hell’s Angels chapter, is taking place at St Cuthbert’s Church, in Darlington.

The proud grandfather, formerly known as George Pamler, pictured below, died just days after his 65th birthday.

Scores of bikers followed the funeral procession to the church, before parking up in the market square.

Following news of his death, scores of tributes were left on social media, with messages left on Twitter using the hashtag #RIPJungle.

His friend and owner of Darlington's Guru Boutique, Beryl Hankin, led the tributes.

“I am proud to have known the legendary Jungle since 1972 when we first met when he and other bikers lived behind Court Arcade where we had a shop,” she said.

“He used to watch out for my mam and I if we ever had any trouble, and his daughter Nichola used to play in the arcade.

“Whenever his name crops up there is always someone who has a great story to tell of him, and he will be deeply missed by us and so many other Darlington people from all walks of life.”

She added: “He was so good with children and was adored by them in return. There is so much more I could say about him but I wouldn’t know where to start.

“He once told me that in his head he would be 18 ‘til he died, and he certainly achieved that and much more. I will never forget him.”

Scores of tributes were also left on the Darlington as it Looked 1880 – 1980 Facebook page.

Richard Bramley said: “Darlington has lost another true son, a man that was a true diamond and a man that I was privileged to know and call my friend, a great loss.

“Deepest sympathy to his family - ride Fast and ride free among the angels now J - never forgotten.”

Vince Allan added: “Big man, big heart. A huge loss to those who knew, loved and respected him. I ain’t never heard anyone say a bad word about J.

“Nothing but the utmost respect for a genuine maverick. Ride on fella.”

Meanwhile, on Twitter, Anthony Davison said: “Very sad to learn about the passing of the local legend that is Jungle. My thoughts are with his family.”
