THREE people were led to safety from a block of flats after a fire in a bed and breakfast in the early hours of this morning.

Cleveland Fire Brigade was called to the B&B at the junction of Laurel Street and Borough Road in MIddlesbrough at 4.17am.

Four fire engines attended the scene.

A spokeswoman for the fire brigade said one room in the B&B was destroyed by fire and the rest of the building suffered severe smoke damage.

Fire crews broke into 14 flats and led three people to safety.

"Fire investigation will commence later today," said the spokeswoman.
