AMMAN United’s long-serving club treasurer has been crowned an unsung hero of Welsh rugby after more than three decades of service to the club.

John Vincent Williams, known to all as JV, has spent 34 years in almost every role imaginable at Cwmaman Park, from the man with the magic sponge to the boss with his hands on the purse strings.

John’s unrivalled passion for the club has now seen him named the SSE Swalec Unsung Hero.

From first aid man to official photographer to treasurer, John’s efforts have never dwindled, despite him requiring knee surgery.

The Unsung Hero award comes after he was nominated by the Amman players and is recognition of his “outstanding contribution to Welsh grassroots rugby”.

The honour celebrates the passion and commitment of individuals such as John, from Garnant, who toil away behind the scenes – often without recognition.

“It was a complete surprise to find out that I have won the award,” said John

“I couldn’t believe it.

“The rugby club is such a big part of the community here in Cwmaman and there are so many members that do so much to see its success.

“All the work that I do is out of love for both the club and the sport, and not for recognition.

“Nevertheless, it means a lot to me to know that what I do is recognised and appreciated by the club.”

Club spokesman Jamie Davies said: “It is impossible to explain all that John has done for the club over the years.

“His name will be known in almost every club in Wales as a result of his tireless efforts for Amman United.

“JV is always ready with a joke, and is a true character - I could go on and on with naming all reasons why he deserves this award.

“John is such a unique individual who goes above and beyond the call of duty for the good of the club.”

SSE Swalec ambassador Ryan Jones said: “Rugby to people in Wales isn’t just a sport; it’s a way of life.

“It’s lovely to see the people who make grassroots rugby happen week after week being recognised, and getting the thanks that they deserve from their teams.

“Good on them for helping to keep the game alive.”

As well as claiming the title, John will receive a Wales jersey signed by former skipper Jones plus tickets to this weekend’s SSE Swalec Finals Day at the Millennium Stadium on May 3.

SSE Swalec is encouraging clubs to nominate the person they believe has been an Unsung Hero in Welsh rugby over the years – be it a player, a coach, a club secretary or dedicated fan.
