JUST days after the country enjoyed the warmest April day for four years, balmy weather gave way to overnight snowstorms for parts of the region.

Remote parts of North Yorkshire, including Reeth in Swaledale and Britain's highest pub - the Tan Hill Inn - woke up to a light covering of snow today (Tuesday, April 28), just days after temperatures reached around 20C.

Parts of Teesdale were also visited by snow, while the rest of the region endured icy winds and bitterly cold temperatures.

Forecasters have said the unsettled weather is set to last, ending hopes of an early summer.

Billy Payne, a forecaster with the MeteoGroup, said temperatures will remain chilly, with showers falling across parts of the region tomorrow (Wednesday, April 29).

“It is going to be chilly for another few days to come and into the weekend before it starts to warm up a bit,” he said.

“By Saturday or Sunday, the wind will be pulling in much milder air. It isn’t going to be a return to the lovely weather we have been having - it will be unsettled with rain at times."
