SIEM DE JONG completed his first full 90 minutes since suffering a collapsed lung yesterday afternoon, but the Dutch international was unable to prevent Newcastle’s development team crashing to a 4-0 defeat at Derby County.
Having come off the bench to score his first senior goal in last weekend’s 3-2 defeat to Swansea City, de Jong played in a withdrawn attacking role behind Adam Armstrong and Facundo Ferreyra.
His fitness held out until full-time, but Newcastle were unable to contain a Derby second string who were watched by Steve McClaren, who has been heavily linked with a permanent head coach position at St James’ Park.
Kwame Thomas fired the Rams into the lead midway through the first half, with Mason Bennett doubling the home side’s lead shortly before the break.
Shaquille McDonald claimed Derby’s third goal with 12 minutes left, and Newcastle’s misery was complete when Ivan Calero completed the scoring in the 85th minute.
Newcastle: Woolston, Sterry (Gilliead 46), Newberry, Cameron, Laidler, Ward (Longstaff 85), Kemen, Barlaser, de Jong, Ferreyra (Heardman 82), Armstrong.
