A MAN is in a critical condition after being brutally attacked in Richmond town centre on Saturday night. (April 25) The man, in his 40s, was attacked on Victoria Road, near the entrance to the Georgian Theatre Royal, which is situated between the Turf Hotel and former popular nightspot, the Fleece.

North Yorkshire Police said the attack happened between 11.10pm and 11.25pm and are urging any witnesses to come forward with any information that would help their investigation.

It is not believed the man had been in the Turf Hotel but the pub was forced to close early on Saturday night so police could deal with the incident nearby.

On Sunday morning, three police cars and a forensics team were on the scene to gather information, and had cordoned off the area around the theatre on Victoria Road and to Friars Wynd, which leads from Victoria Road to the Market Place.

The theatre did not have any scheduled performances for Saturday evening after a family show of the Adventure of Robin Hood at 2pm, and there was nothing due to be shown on Sunday.

The victim suffered a head injury and is currently receiving treatment at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.

Two suspects have been arrested – a 24-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman – in connection with the attack and both remained in police custody on Sunday evening.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “Officers are appealing to anyone who was in the Victoria Road area of Richmond around the time the assault occurred to come forward with information.”

Anyone who can help officers with their enquiries is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police’s Major Crime Unit on 101.

Those who prefer not to give their name can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
