BOLDON duo Rhys Thompson and Gavin Nesbitt have clinched the honours in the Northumberland and Durham Inter County Foursomes.

The in-form pair capped off a memorable April by following up champions of Durham status by defeating their Northumberland counterparts Whitley Bay in the final at Boldon in a comfortable 6&5 victory.

Boldon were on song throughout their qualifying campaign. After seeing off Whickham in the first round 4&3, Nesbitt and Thomspon followed that up with a closely-fought win on the 19th hole over Bishop Auckland on the same course.

Brancepeth Castle were comfortably beaten 5&4 at Seaham in the next round before repeating the scoreline to knock out South Moor on the afternoon. To finish things off in the Durham area, they beat Eaglescliffe by 4&2 to tee up a date with Whitley Bay in the final.

THERE was a comfortable win for Durham County Golf Union when they faced the Teesside Golf Union last weekend.

Durham already had a 9-3 advantage when they smashed their way through the singles matches to claim a 28-8 overall victory at Billingham Golf Club.

Thompson, Chris Handy (South Moor), Stuart Brown (Castle Eden), Imran Aziz (George Washington), Kris Rae (Tyneside), Sam Robinson (Tyneside), Jordan Betts (Ravensworth), Joe Fraser (Ravensworth) and Jack Richardson (Durham City) all won their singles games for Durham.

Billingham’s Brad Hildreth and Blackwell Grange’s Adam Bates got on the scoresheet for Teesside, while Nesbitt and Eaglescliffe’s Sam Donald halved their match.

In the foursomes only Cameron Wallace (Hartlepool) & Chris Brown (Castle Eden) claimed maximum points for Teesside, with Eaglescliffe’s Tom Smith & Donald gaining a point against Thompson & nd Nesbitt.

Handy & Brown, Aziz & Martin McCririck (South Shields), Rae & Robinson and Betts & Fraser all won their foursomes games for Durham earlier in the day.
