THE daughter of the world’s most famous vet has now become a patron of the charity that bears her father’s name.

Former GP Rosie Page is the daughter of Alf Wight, the late Thirsk vet who was beloved by millions thanks to the stories he wrote under the pen-name James Herriot.

Now she has become an official patron of Herriot Hospice Homecare which provides home-based hospice care and other services across North Yorkshire.

Dr Page, who lives in Thirlby near Thirsk, has worked for the charity as a volunteer and an adviser for more than 13 years.

She said: “When I was asked to become a patron I didn’t think I was important enough - my only claim to fame is that I am lucky enough to be “James Herriot’s” daughter.

“But I am honoured to have become a patron of such an amazing charity. Over the many years that I have been a volunteer driver and sitter I have seen what a difference it makes to terminally ill people and their families.

“I always feel very privileged to be welcomed into patients’ homes, and to be part of a team helping to support them in the final stages of their lives. It is a very humbling experience.

“I know dad would have been delighted to know his name was being used in this way. He would have approved wholeheartedly.”
