* STRATHCLYDE Regional Council is to be taken to an industrial

tribunal by staff who claim they are underpaid by up to #10,000 a year.

Principals and assistant principals at outdoor activity centres in the

region are suing in a bid to win equal pay with teachers who they claim

do the same job but earn more.

The group's lawyer, Mr Rod McKenzie, of solicitors Harper Macleod,

said: ''Outdoor centres offer activities, such as skiing and canoeing,

which require constant supervision and greater safety considerations,

yet the people in charge are paid only a percentage of the salaries of

residential head teachers.''

A region spokeswoman said: ''We take a contrary view to their

interpretation of the employment legislation, but it will be for the

tribunal to decide the outcome.''
