MADRID Lyrics proposed last week for Spain's national anthem were dropped yesterday amid criticism that they evoke the fascist era and do not reflect Spain's rich diversity.

The four stanzas have been shelved out of a "lack of consensus", said Alejandro Blanco, president of the Spanish Olympic Committee, whose contest seeking proposed lyrics received 7000 entries.

"The lyrics have generated controversy and in some cases, rejection," said Blanco. He said the search would go on.

The anthem dates back to the 18th century. As it has no words, Spaniards can only hum along, making for awkward moments at official ceremonies and sporting events.

The lyrics, by Paulino Cubero, start with "Viva Espana!" - the rallying cry of the Franco dictatorship - and call on Spaniards to "love the fatherland".

Tenor Placido Domingo had been due to sing the lyrics for the first time at a gala event on January 21, but that has been cancelled, Blanco said.

Domingo said he had long dreamed of singing his country's anthem.

"It is something I have always felt disappointed and frustrated about," he said in Milan, Italy, where he is performing. "If there is an important event, you cannot sing along."-AP
