Aperson was killed and two others injured last night after fire broke out in a two-vehicle collision.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene to find one of the vehicles in flames at around 6pm on the Edinburgh city bypass near the Straiton junction.

A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed there had been one fatality while a male and a female had also been taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Officials said one of the vehicles had been burned out after the collision. At the time of the crash, the conditions were said to be clear.

But thick fog was blamed for a 26-car pile-up on the M62 in Cheshire on Christmas Eve. One woman remains in a poor condition in hospital following the collision on the east-bound carriageway nearWarrington. A further five were discharged after treatment for chest, stomach, shoulder and neck injuries.

The Met Office predicted harsh weather conditions for much of the UK over the next four days with snow showers predicted in many areas.

A spokesman said there was a 40per cent chance of snow in eastern Scotland until Wednesday, with fog likely in much of the country.

But England was expected to bear the brunt of the weather.

The spokesman added: "There is potential for several centimetres of snow to occur widely, and in excess of 15cm in a few locations, with Kent and parts of East Anglia most vulnerable to the heavier falls."

A woman who died in a head-on road crash in the Borders was named by police yesterday.

Katy Osborne, 26, from Jarrow, Newcastle, died when her car was involved in the collision on the A1.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital and treated for serious leg injuries following the crash, which happened near Eyemouth.
