RECENT frequent weather changes between dull, wet conditions and clear skies and frost have been very noticeable here in Ayrshire. On Wednesday morning, the day after the shortest day, it was quite dark even at 8.30am.

Seeing children heading off to school, thank goodness, I thought, for the clocks going back an hour at the end of October, otherwise they would be walking to school in complete darkness. At the other end of the day, children leaving schools at 3.30pm are also able to head for home in daylight, even if, like Tuesday, it was pretty dark shortly after 4pm because of the very dull, wet conditions.

It seems to me that the current, longstanding arrangement is best from the pedestrian safety point of view, and the 1960s experiment with British Summer Time should never be reintroduced.
