DUNDEE United legend Dave Narey was last night back at Tannadice in a coaching role.
The 42-year-old, capped 35 times by Scotland and the scorer of an unforgettable World Cup goal against Brazil in 1982, is replacing Jocky Scott in Tommy McLean's backroom team. United invited their former defender to return to the fold in the aftermath of Scott's decision to quit Tannadice to take over as Dundee manager from John McCormack.
Tannadice manager McLean said last night: ''Dave will be working with us on a part-time basis at least in the beginning.
''His position will give him an insight into coaching and we are delighted that we have been able to bring back a former player who means so much to the club.''
Narey spent 22 years with United as a player and made a record 866 first-team appearances, winning two League Cup medals and a championship medal. He was freed by United in 1994 and joined Raith Rovers and was there only a matter of months when he won the man of the match award as the Kirkcaldy club surprised Celtic in the Coca-Cola Cup final at Ibrox.
Meantime, Jocky Scott has targeted Rangers coach John Brown as his Dens Park assistant. Brown played under Scott's guidance for the four seasons he was at Dens Park and achieved great success, including scoring a hat trick at Dens Park in 1985.
He moved to Glasgow - signed by Graeme Souness - two years later. The 36-year-old has been at Ibrox for 10 years and helped Rangers to eight of their nine championships in a row.
He was appointed as a reserve team coach. However, with the imminent departure of manager Walter Smith at the end of the season, Brown faces an uncertain future.
qKEVIN Gallacher is set for a surprise comeback in the English FA Cup tie with West Ham on Monday.
The Blackburn Rovers and Scotland striker has been sidelined with a pelvic injury that has made him unable to train properly for the past fortnight. He has been troubled with the injury for a couple of months but reckons he will be back in action after missing out the home defeat by Tottenham.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
