ABOUT 800 apprentices are to be signed up by Northern Powergrid over the next eight years.

The company, which transports electricity to homes and businesses in the North-East and Yorkshire, is launching a recruitment drive which will see hundreds of people start a new career in the energy industry.

Northern Powergrid says it is looking for “enthusiastic, hands on” individuals who want to learn a trade for life after leaving school or college, or those who are simply looking for a career change

Lindi Hutchinson, director of human resources at Northern Powergrid, said: “We want to attract a new generation of people into our business. Last year we delivered an investment programme of more than £400m and we want to strengthen our team as we deliver our future plans to further improve the region’s electricity network.

“Over the next eight years, we will take on around 100 new craft and technical recruits every year. Our craft apprentices will work as part of a skilled team and receive the training they need to develop an exciting career in the energy industry.

“Through a mix of practical experience, on-the-job training and college study they will achieve recognised qualifications and, for those who prove themselves, a permanent job.”

Interested candidates should visit Northern Powergrid’s website www.northernpowergrid.com/careers to complete an online application form. Applications close on April 6.
