VOLUNTEERS turned out to give an east Cleveland village a spring clean.

A band of dedicated litter-pickers arrived at Skelton Castle Cricket Club at the weekend to help transform the area.

Helpers dedicated their free time to clear up areas in Redcar, Loftus, Skinningrove, New Marske, South Bank, Ormesby, Skelton, Brotton and Coatham.

The scheme, backed by the government, is a national campaign that aims to spruce up the country’s high streets, residential and business areas, villages and parks.

Councillor Barry Hunt, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council’s cabinet member for environment and rural affairs, said: “Keeping our town clean is something we can all help with, and these dedicated individuals are showing what pride the people of our town has in the area.

“We can all play our part in keeping the area clean and tidy, and it’s small but significant efforts like this that really make a big difference.”
