Today is Purple Day, aimed at raising worldwide awareness of epilepsy, a condition which affects 65 million people globally. Supporters are encouraged to become an ‘Ambassador of Purple’ by wearing purple and spreading awareness of epilepsy in the community. Purple Day is so called because lavender is the international colour for epilepsy.

• Today is also National Spinach Day and everyone knows spinach is very good for you. Coincidentally, on this day in 1937, Popeye became the first cartoon character to have a statue erected in his honour – by spinach growers in Texas.
