A SMALL village has told its incredible Great War story through an event designed to engage all ages.

Faceby, near Stokesley, is a hamlet consisting of just 31 homes 0 but it sent 17 soldiers to the First World War. Three of those received one of the highest military honours, the Military Cross.

And over the weekend the village hall hosted a Great War exhibition, the idea for which came from a number of residents and was researched by Ruth Southern.

Naomi Beeley, one of those who has helped organise the event said: “A few of the villagers have got together, inspired by the war memorial in St Mary Magdalene Church, that records six soldiers who died in World War One.

“We have researched their stories and also those of 11 others who joined up but returned. From a village of only 31 houses, we had 17 soldiers who enlisted and three won the Military Cross.”

Artefacts were loaned from a variety of locations around the country including the Durham Light Infantry Museum..

The items on display included an ashtray created from bullets and other trench art created from objects soldiers picked up from the battlefield.
