SCHOOLGIRL Laura Bauwens has been crafty for charity – in honour of her grandmother.

The seven-year-old, a pupil at Pickhill primary near Thirsk, has been busy making cards to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

The youngster lost her gran Jean Grove, 69, to the illness almost two years ago and went on to raise £24 by making and selling Valentine’s Day cards.

The idea for designing and selling cards came to her after watching a TV show and now she has taken her arts and crafts kit out again to produce Easter cards. “I hope I can raise enough money so the charity can buy medicine and make people better,” she said.

“I always used to make Grandma cards and she loved getting them. She especially liked the ones with my handprints on. She used to make her own cards too – hers were made with cross-stitch.

“My cards are yellow but they have different coloured Easter eggs on. I’m hoping to sell enough so I can send £50 to the charity.”
