Goals:

1-0: McCarthy (20, received the ball from Lukaku and drilled a low 20-yard shot past a flat-footed Krul)

2-0: Lukaku (pen, 56, rolled home spot-kick after Gouffran bundled over Lennon in the area)

3-0: Barkley (90, played in by Atsu and rounded Krul before slotting home)

Bookings: R Taylor (29, foul), Lennon (79, foul)

Sending Offs: Coloccini (59, violent conduct)

Referee: Martin Atkinson (Leeds) – Had to send off Coloccini following the captain’s senseless challenge on Lennon, and also got the penalty call right 7

EVERTON (4-4-2):

Howard 7; Coleman 7, Jagielka 7, Alcaraz 6, Baines 7; Lennon 8 (Atsu 85), McCarthy 7 (Besic 86), Gibson 6, Osman 6; Kone 6, LUKAKU 8 (Barkley 73).

Subs (not used): Robles (gk), Garbutt, Stones, Naismith.

NEWCASTLE (4-4-2):

4 Krul: Lost the flight of McCarthy’s shot, and while he made a couple of useful second-half saves, his error was extremely costly

6 JANMAAT: Was the pick of Newcastle’s defenders when playing at right-back and coped reasonably well at centre-half

2 Coloccini: Was already having a difficult afternoon against Lukaku before he senselessly got himself sent off for an awful lunge at Lennon

5 Williamson: Struggled against Lukaku throughout, but at least retained his composure unlike his errant skipper

5 R Taylor: Struggled at left-back in the first half, but delivered a couple of decent free-kicks and cleared a goalbound shot off the line

3 Obertan: Saw an early shot saved by Howard, but was utterly ineffective thereafter and was withdrawn at half-time

5 Colback: Was reasonably effective in central midfield in the first half, and slotted in at left-back after Coloccini’s dismissal

5 Sissoko: Found himself forced to sit deep for most of the game, but at least tested Howard with a decent second-half strike

4 Ameobi: Another lacklustre performance from the midfielder, whose failure to deliver telling crosses into the middle is a major issue

3 Gouffran: Didn’t look comfortable as a central striker, but got worse when pushed deep, culminating in a senseless penalty concession

3 Riviere: It’s hard to remember the Frenchman producing an effective display in a Newcastle shirt – and this was another poor display

Subs:

Perez (for Obertan, 46): Added a bit of pace and energy after his belated introduction and surely has to start next weekend’s game with Arsenal 6

Cabella (for Ameobi, 58): Offers more than the player he replaced, but struggled to exert an influence from a position on the left flank 5

Gutierrez (for Riviere, 62): Was cheered by both sets of fans when he came on, but the game was already up by then 5

(not used): Elliot (gk), Satka, Anita, Armstrong.

Man Of The Match: ROMELU LUKAKU – For the second season in a row, the Everton striker out-powered Newcastle’s defenders as his side won at Goodison.
