FIFTEEN TEAMS of young people completed against one and other in a timed map reading challenge.

Over 70 scouts and explorers from across North Yorkshire took part in the annual Brass Monkey Challenge organised by Richmondshire Scouts. Centred on Reeth this year, the aim was to complete a 20-kilometre course within the time allocated and visit as many of the 17 checkpoints as possible.

Most of the teams were without close adult supervision and had to plan their route themselves. The 25 volunteers who assisted on the day manned various stages along the route to ensure fair play and keep up morale.

The winning scout team was Holmedale which consisted of: Thomas Chandler, along with Will Tompson, Harry, and Joe Mawer, James and Mathew Anderson. Castle Explorers won the senior trophy. Their team consisted of Andrew Neate, Cameron Sykes, Joseph Monaghan, and Luke McCormack.

Organiser, Assistant District Commissioner Gavin Ions explained. He said: “The challenge is to test planning skills along with the ability to map read.

“I thought it was an absolutely fantastic day; all the teams of young people worked really well together.

“I am grateful to all the adult helpers without whom the day would not be possible.”

Teams taking part were Scouts: Holmedale, Catterick Garrison, Barton, Brompton, Swaledale, Wensleydale. Explorers, Castle, Beadle, Half Moon and Titanic.
