AN exotic African chest is set to go under the hammer at the Addisons of Barnard Castle auctioneers on Thursday (March 5).

Originating from Zanzibar – one of the famous Indian Ocean Spice Islands – the early 19th Century hardwood piece is elaborately carved and expected to reach between £800 and £1,200.

Measuring just over one metre in length and around half a metre high, the chest’s carcass has engraved strap work and brass studs as well as a hinged rectangular top with three short drawers and bracket feet.

“I find it intriguing that such an amazing artefact can end up in the heart of rural Teesdale,” said auctioneer and valuer, William McNab.

“It originates from a place renowned for trade, adventure and exploration, and who knows what its past might hold.

“Was it bought by a merchant on their way to Arabia or India or was it the property of a rich plantation owner and how did it get to Britain?”

He added: “It really is one of the fascinating things about antiques and why they can unlock a small part of a past and mysterious world.”

The chest is one of several objects included in the sale which showcases a wide range of fine furniture, ceramics, jewellery, silver and textiles.

The sale starts at 10am and bidding can be made in person, online or on the phone.

The contents of the sale can be viewed on Tuesday, March 3, from 10 to 4.30pm, Wednesday, March 4, between 10am and 7pm and from 8am on the morning of the sale.
