YORK CITY’S struggles in front of goal were apparent again as they failed to score for the seventh time in their ten games in 2015 during a goalless draw with Exeter City.

The Minstermen find themselves one point above the League Two relegation zone after another disappointing afternoon at Bootham Crescent that saw them fail to seriously test an Exeter side who have not won in seven matches.

York’s best chances fell to Wes Fletcher, who forced a near-post save from visiting goalkeeper James Hamon and headed over from a Marvin McCoy cross after the break.

Exeter created the first chance in the 17th minute, but Bobby Olejink produced a fine double save to deny Liam Sercombe and Clinton Morrison.

Stephane Zubar had to be at his most alert to clear Alex Nicholls’ close-range drive off the line, before York’s first opportunity saw Diego De Girolamo side-foot narrowly wide after a positive burst down the left from Josh Carson.

Fletcher forced Hamon into a decent near-post save shortly before the interval, and headed over from McCoy’s dangerous cross on the hour mark.

Exeter barely threatened in the second half, with Sercombe’s wayward shot in the 82nd minute their only effort, but despite a late opportunity falling to Michael Coulson, York were unable to make the breakthrough that might have eased their worries at the foot of the table.

York boss Russ Wilcox said: “I think it's a game we should have won, especially with our second-half performance.

“I can't fault the players for attitude, work ethic, desire. You'd like a little bit more quality, but it is difficult out there on the pitch at the moment to create that quality.

"We've got to move on to the next game. It's a point, and we have to speak about the positive side of it.”
