WILF Whitnall enjoyed a day at the Stadium of Light on Saturday for the FA Cup game between his team, Sunderland, and Fulham.
Octogenarian Mr Whitnall is the oldest member of the Bedale branch of the Sunderland Supporters' Club and remembers, as a ten-year-old, Sunderland winning their sixth league title, by a margin of eight points, scoring 109 goals during the season, with Raich Carter and Bobby Gurney each scoring 31.
He remembers well their first FA Cup win in 1937 when they beat Preston North End 3–1 in the final at Wembley.
After the goalless draw last weekend, another Wembley victory looks a long way off, but Mr Whitnall will enjoy his pack of lager presented to him after the game by Swedish international Sebastian Larsson.
