DETECTIVES have arrested a Manchester man in connection with two armed robberies at jewellery shops on Teesside.

The 27-year-old was arrested on suspicion of robbery following incidents reported in Yarm in December and in Middlesbrough in January.

The suspect is in police custody awaiting questioning about the raids that took place at Market Cross Jewellers in Yarm in November and earlier this month at the firm’s Middlesbrough branch.

During both raids armed men smashed windows and display cabinets to steal designer watches, jewellery and cash after threatening staff with axes.

Two other men, aged 19 and 24, who were arrested on January 15 in connection with the incidents remain on bail pending further enquiries.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Officers would again like to appeal to local hoteliers and those who run or own local bed and breakfast venues to contact police if they had any guests who may have spoken with a North-West accent who may have raised their suspicions around the time of the Middlesbrough robbery on Tuesday, January 13.”

Anyone with information is urged to call the force on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
