AN parliamentary candidate has backed a report which urges the next government to value the countryside more highly.

Robin Scott, independent parliamentary candidate for Richmond, met chair of the Rural Coalition, Lord Teverson, to show his support for the Rural Challenge 2015 report.

The document, which was published by the Rural Coalition in December, makes recommendations to improve the rural economy.

The report calls for a range of changes including planning reform, improved broadband, more affordable housing and the maintenance of rural bus services.

Lord Teverson welcomed Mr Scott’s support.

He said: "“The Rural Coalition and its members are determined that the health of rural Britain should figure prominently in the programme of the next government and in the minds of those elected to Parliament.

“I welcome the backing given to the rural cause from all parties and candidates.”

Mr Scott added: “I welcome the publication of the Rural Challenge 2015 report and look forward to supporting the recommendations which flow from it especially policies aimed at growing the rural economy through broadband and 4G provision."
