A HUSBAND who stabbed his estranged wife’s lover to death during a brutal attack in front of their two young children has been jailed for life.

Oktay Kilic, 40, from Harrogate, used a kitchen knife to cause horrific fatal injuries to Mark Berney, 44, from Knaresborough.

He found the pair together in his wife Kathleen’s car after tracking the vehicle down, using a smartphone app, to a lay-by near the North Yorkshire village of Ripley in August last year.

Kilic, a taxi driver originally from Turkey, confronted and attacked Mr Berney while the two children were screaming in his own cab.

Kilic denied murder when he appeared at Leeds Crown Court but was found guilty and sentenced to life – and now must serve a minimum of 27 years.

After the killing a major police operation was launched to track down Kilic but, after dropping the youngsters with his wife’s mother, he travelled to the Wigan area where he handed himself in during the early hours of the following day.

Following the verdict Mr Berney’s family issued a statement in which they said justice had now been done.

They said the last six months had been distressing and traumatic and added: "Although Otkay Kilic will serve a long custodial sentence, the family will also serve our private sentence of never seeing Mark again.”

The lead investigator, Detective Superintendent Dai Malyn, said: “Although I appreciate nothing will ever compensate the tragic loss of Mark Berney to his family and friends, I hope the result provides them with some comfort and satisfaction.”

The case has highlighted the growing use of online and mobile technology in domestic abuse, harassment and serious crimes and police are now urging people to take steps to ensure their safety and privacy.
